Changing domain name servers, or DNS entries, sounds scary but it is really easy when know how. Let me walk you through the steps.

DNS – Domain Name Servers

The main reason to change name servers is because you have changed website or blog hosts. This change means we now need to point our address to a new host.

Whilst it may seem easy to purchase your domain name through your host, if you change hosts you can end up with domain registrars all over the place.

I always choose the same host to register ALL my domain names through.

My domains are all through Crazy Domains. It may not always be the cheapest but I have about 30 names registered. I would hate to have them spread out all over the blogosphere. Also, Crazy Domains is reputable and reliable, I have never had a problem.

Here are some of my other picks for top domain choices.

New Domains

Anytime I use one of my website names I will point the DNS entries to the webhost I have chosen.

Pointing DNS Entries

The first step is to ask your new host for their nameserver records. These can be in the form of an ip address or, as in the case of Bluehost. Your host will usually have emailed these in a welcome email.

ns1.bluehost.com

ns2.bluehost.com

  • Login into your domain registrar (where you registered the blog name)
  • Go to your Dashboard and select the domain name you would like to redirect
  • This will open the records for your domain.
  • Go to Manage DNS or Nameserver Records
  • Edit the existing DNS record with the new entry. You will have two entries to update, as in the above example.
  • Click save, or update

That is it! Now you make yourself a cup of tea, read a book and put your feet up!

Relax

…haha! Just kidding, we may still need to wait on the nameservers to redirect to your new host but there is still so many fun things to do to get your blog ready for launch!

Now might be a good time to start getting your social media accounts set up!

It can take from 1 hour to 24 hours for the domain name servers to propagate and for the transfer to occur. Once that has happened you can go back to where you left off, setting up your WordPress site on Bluehost.
